Position Summary:

We are seeking a Scientist to perform hands-on surface analysis of polymeric and biocompatible materials with a focus on the surface characterization by ToF-SIMS and AFM.  This role is within the Microscopy and Surface Science R&D group providing analytical services, expertise, and support to internal and external customers pertaining to Vision and Vision Care products. Additional responsibilities include providing critical support for manufacturing and operations. The position will contribute to R&D projects and participate in problem solving throughout product lifecycles (development, pilot, and mature manufacturing).

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Characterization of polymeric materials using time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to understand the relationship between surface chemistry, surface structure, and wetting behavior.
  • Interpretation of complex datasets collected across multiple techniques to provide an understanding of surface properties.
  • Develop new approaches to characterize the surface properties of polymeric and biocompatible materials used in contact lenses.
  • Analysis of materials using techniques to include time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and contact angle measurements.
  • Serve as Analytical representative and function as a technical lead for research and development activities within a larger project team.
  • Provide Analytical support of manufacturing and operations with problem solving activities.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or relevant field with 0-3 yrs experience or MS with 5+ yrs experience preferred in medical device or FDA regulated industry.
  • Extensive knowledge of ToF-SIMS including data acquisition techniques, analysis methods and preferred experience with principal component analysis (PCA).
  • Experienced with AFM operation and preparation of samples, preferably including hydrated/immersed sample analysis.
  • Preferred experience with TEM operation and preparation of samples, including image analysis, microtome cross-sectioning, ion milling, and cryogenic techniques.
  • Preferred experience in performing and interpreting interfacial energy and surface energy by contact angle or wettability measurement.
  • Preferred experience with range of methods for chemical characterization of surfaces (XPS, Raman, FTIR).
  • Preferred experience with hydrated room temperature and/or cryogenic sample analysis.
  • Creative and effective problem-solving skills to approach varied issues throughout product lifecycles and the ability to apply scientific principles to a broad range of technical assignments.
  • The ability to develop working relationships with various internal core competencies and to project influence across the organization.
  • Willingness to support a wide range of customers from R&D to plant-level problem solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting pay for this role is between $70,000.00 and $115,000.00.  The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors.

 

U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/or long-term incentives.
