The Medical Device Engineer II supports the design and development of contact lenses within Bausch + Lomb’s Vision Care R&D organization. This role serves as a product advocate on cross-functional project teams, working in support of the lead design engineer while progressively taking on greater ownership of design tasks, data analysis, and testing coordination.
The lens design group is involved in all aspects of the product life cycle of the medical device—from designing and developing contact lenses to communicating with clinicians to gain feedback about the lenses.
Responsibilities
- Develop contact lens designs using mechanical and optical modeling tools
- Perform statistical analysis of processing data during product development that help project team make project decisions
- Support preparation of design documentation including specifications and design verification
- Define and coordinate product testing (clinical and bench) requests
- Prepare reports summarizing product design, testing, and development data
- May lead some project team meetings and tasks
- Operate within a regulated medical device environment (FDA, ISO 13485, EU MDR)
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Optics, or Biomedical); Master’s degree preferred
- 3+ years experience in medical device product development, ideally in ophthalmic/contact lens or related precision-engineered consumer health products
- Hands-on experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and statistical analysis (JMP or Minitab)
- Track record of contributing to product launches or design verification/validation activities
- Experience working on cross-functional project teams in a regulated environment
- Experience with Data analysis tools (Tableau, MATLAB)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Attention to detail and documentation rigor
Preferred
- Optical design experience (Zemax)
- Contact lens or ophthalmic industry experience.
- Understanding of design controls for medical devices
- Experience with Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) tools
- Knowledge of FDA 21 CFR 820, ISO 13485, ISO 14971
- Experience with DOE (Design of Experiments)
- Familiarity with polymer science or materials science

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting pay for this role is between $65,000.00 and $100,000.00. The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors.
U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/or long-term incentives.
