Objectives/Purpose of Job:

 

The occupational health nurse assesses the health needs of employees, performs required medical surveillance, assists with aspects of short-term disability, transitional return to work process, and assesses ADA requests. The OHN will ensure health programs and initiatives are in accordance with Company Policy, Standards and applicable laws.

 

Key Activities/Responsibilities:

 

  • Administer first aid and CPR in the event of medical emergencies. Supervise plant first aid coverage and training.                                                                                                      
  • Provide initial assessment of on-the-job injuries or non-occupational illnesses and refer for further evaluation as necessary.
  • Provide direct care, including treatment of occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Coordination of administrative and medical case management for workers' compensation/injury management or non-occupational disability programs inclusive of first report of injury, coordination of medical care, case follow up, liaison with internal staff/external health care providers and insurance administrators.  Provide medical expertise in compliance in consultation with HR regarding Family Medical Leave Act.
  • Manage transitional return to work activities, identifying alternative modified work options and monitor to optimized full duty status. May need to complete job analysis within the scope of nursing assessments.
  • Coordinate and monitor medical surveillance programs, i.e. audiograms, respiratory protection, vision screenings, etc. as required by Company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with Environment, Health + Safety on injury/illness prevention, training and communication programs (i.e. blood borne pathogen, CPR/first aid, etc.).
  • Coordinate health promotion/wellness programs such as the flu shot, lunch and learn programs, and other wellness programs.  Conduct pre-placement questionnaires & review fitness for duty evaluations.
  • Maintain health, administrative, and program records, safeguarding confidentiality of employee health information.
  • Collaborate with management on compatible goals and objectives. Participate in meetings regarding issues of health and safety, such as: accident investigation, risk management, ergonomics, and health promotion. Provide input and assist with department budget needs.
  • Provide assistance regarding referrals to EAP in accordance with facility needs.
  • Complete necessary reports such as the weekly log, monthly statistics and cost savings report, etc.

 

Qualifications/Training:

 

  • Current state registered nurse license to practice in the state of employment.
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in occupational health nursing in a manufacturing setting.
  • Experience in community health, ambulatory care, critical care or emergency nursing preferred.
  • Ability to work with a team and/or independently.
  • Certifications in occupational health nursing, case management and basic life support preferred.
  • Ability to make independent nursing judgements, perform basic physical assessments, problem solve, and have strong time management skills.
  • Strong computer, verbal and written skills to communicate.
  • Good time management, organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work assignments.

 

Eligibility for Internal Applicants:

 

  • Have no corrective actions at the written warning level in last six months / no final warning level in the last 12 months / no active PIP. 
  • Meet the qualifications of the position as stated above.                                                     
  • Be in your current job for 12 months.
