POSITION OVERVIEW
The Senior Director, Intraocular Lens & Inserter Development will lead the strategic and technical direction of Bausch + Lomb’s IOL and inserter product lines within the Surgical Device Division. This individual will be responsible for driving full lifecycle product development, from concept through commercialization and sustaining innovation, with deep technical oversight and cross-functional leadership across R&D, engineering, quality, manufacturing, and regulatory functions. The ideal candidate brings a proven track record in ophthalmic device development, particularly in IOL design, inserter systems, and lens delivery technologies, and can bridge technical depth with strategic thinking.
This role will ensure that Bausch + Lomb continues to lead the market with innovative, safe, and effective IOL solutions that meet both clinician and patient needs globally. It requires an experienced medical device leader with strong technical, operational, and business acumen
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the design, development, and lifecycle management of intraocular lenses and inserter/delivery systems, ensuring alignment with clinical needs, customer feedback, and market trends.
Serve as the technical authority for IOL materials, optics, haptics, coatings, and delivery mechanics, guiding teams through R&D, prototyping, verification/validation, and transfer to manufacturing.
Collaborate with manufacturing and operations teams to optimize designs for manufacturability, scale-up, and cost-efficiency while ensuring high product quality and regulatory compliance.
Drive product development strategies in alignment with business priorities, ensuring timely execution of programs within scope and budget.
Partner closely with Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, and Marketing teams to navigate complex development challenges and ensure global regulatory readiness (FDA, CE/MDR, NMPA, PMDA).
Develop and maintain product development roadmaps, driving continuous innovation and competitive differentiation across the IOL and inserter portfolio.
Champion cross-functional problem solving, root cause analysis, and risk management to ensure robust product performance and compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
Engage with key opinion leaders (KOLs), surgeons, and internal stakeholders to translate clinical insights into product design requirements.
Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and technical project managers, fostering a high-performance culture of innovation and accountability.
Support business development and portfolio planning with technical due diligence and strategic input on potential acquisitions or partnerships in the lens and inserter space.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Advanced degree (MS, PhD, or equivalent) in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related technical field.
10+ years of experience in medical device development, with deep expertise in intraocular lens design, materials, and insertion/delivery technologies.
Proven track record of bringing complex ophthalmic devices to market through full design control processes.
Strong understanding of medical device regulatory requirements (FDA 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, ISO 11979 series), as well as quality systems, risk management (ISO 14971), and human factors engineering.
Experience working in or closely with manufacturing functions, including scale-up, process development, and supplier management.
Demonstrated success in cross-functional team leadership, technical program management, and strategy development.
Deep familiarity with optical metrology, material testing, mechanical systems design, and device delivery mechanics.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a strong ability to interface with senior leadership, clinical experts, and regulatory bodies.

For U.S. locations that require disclosure of compensation, the starting pay for this role is between $190,000.00 and $250,000.00. The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors.
U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/or long-term incentives.
