Objectives:

The Director, External Scientific Innovation will work with the head of Research and External Scientific Innovation to search and evaluate external opportunities for collaboration, in-license, or acquisition to participate in our aspiration to build a highly-innovative pharma and consumer pipeline delivering transformative therapies and products to our patients.   The ideal candidate will have experience interfacing with external partners and participation in evaluation and due diligence activities.  Experience in ophthalmology drug development is highly desired.  This role will be responsible for initiating and leading diligence programs, working with diverse cross-functional teams to create a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation of innovative opportunities.  She/he/they will build research plans and support business development and legal colleagues to craft collaborative agreements designed to achieve clear goals.  They will serve as a project leader on early development projects, responsible for a creating a shared team vision, collaborative environment, and execution towards goals.  Excellent communication skills are necessary to influence both internal and external stakeholders.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Help us build a comprehensive and risk-balanced pipeline through identification of highly-innovative external opportunities.
  • Monitor and track the latest scientific advances, new technologies, assets, and potential partners in the field to make recommendations for evaluation.
  • Critically evaluate new technologies, assets, and the capabilities of potential partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with multiple potential partners, contribute to making B+L the partner of choice in ophthalmology.
  • Develop productive collaborations with internal cross-functional partners within R&D and the broader Bausch + Lomb organization.
  • Travel to scientific and innovation-focused meetings and conferences will be required (<20% travel).

 

Skills:

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams and navigating in a matrixed organization.
  • Ability to work with scientific, business development, and legal partners for the successful evaluation, creation, and execution of collaborative research agreements, in-licenses, and acquisitions.

 

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biological Science or related discipline and at least 9 years experience (combined) in drug development and/or search and evaluation (ophthalmology highly-desired); or an MS and at least 12 years combined industry experience in these areas.
  • Experience in drug discovery or development including familiarity with small molecules, biologics, cell and gene therapies.

As required by California's Salary Transparency Law, Bausch + Lomb provides a good faith minimum and maximum salary range of compensation for roles that can or will be performed, in California.  Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific office location.  For California, the range of starting annual base pay for this role is $160,000 to $240,000.
